Afternoons sit around 14–17°C, bright and dry, which makes the Strip walkable at midday and the canyons outside the city a pleasure; the nights are cold, close to freezing in December and January. It is also the season of the city's sharpest price swings: the National Finals Rodeo from 3 to 12 December 2026, New Year's Eve, CES from 6 to 9 January 2027 and the Super Bowl weekend in mid-February are among the dearest dates of the year, while the weeks between them are among the cheapest. Choose your dates, and winter is the best-value season in Las Vegas.

What that actually means for your trip:
- The sun makes the day; the dark takes it away. A 15°C afternoon in full sun feels warm, but the temperature falls by ten degrees within a couple of hours of sunset.
- The daylight is short. The sun sets around 4:30pm at the solstice, so desert trips need morning starts until February lengthens the afternoons.
- Winter storms are rare but real. A cold front can bring wind, rain in the valley and snow on the Spring Mountains, visible from the Strip.
- Pools mostly close. The great resort pool complexes shut or shrink to a heated pool or two until spring.
Is winter a good time to visit Las Vegas? Yes, for the shows, the food, the desert and the prices, as long as you plan around the four big dates. It is not the season for pool parties or sunbathing. The quiet stretches, mid-December, the second half of January and February midweek, offer the lowest room rates of the year with the most comfortable outdoor weather.

The fortnight after it, including Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday 18 January, is the cheapest stretch of the whole year.
February is the mildest month and the quietest, apart from one weekend: in 2027, Super Bowl Sunday and Valentine's Day both fall on 14 February, followed by Presidents' Day on the Monday.
Chinese New Year begins on Saturday 6 February.
#What to Do in Las Vegas in Winter
Solo Travellers
Hike Red Rock Canyon on a crisp morning, from the Calico Tanks to the Ice Box Canyon trail, and spend the evening downtown at the Neon Museum and under the Fremont Street canopy.
Couples
Book a residency or a production show in a quiet week, a tasting menu in one of the chef-led rooms, and a drive to Valley of Fire for its red rock and petroglyphs. February is the classic month for a Las Vegas wedding or vow renewal.
Families
The resorts' holiday displays in December and the Chinese New Year display at the Bellagio Conservatory in February are free; the Shark Reef Aquarium and Hoover Dam suit a cool day.
Groups
Pick your party: the rodeo fortnight for country bars, New Year's Eve for the biggest night out, the Super Bowl for the sportsbooks, and the quiet weeks for the best tables at the clubs and shows.
#Getting Around
There is no train from Harry Reid International Airport, but the Strip is close, and taxis and rideshares wait at the marked kerbs.
The Deuce double-decker plies the Boulevard all day and night, and the Las Vegas Monorail runs north from the MGM Grand behind the east-side resorts.
Winter is the season to drive out.
Red Rock Canyon is about 30 minutes west, with a timed-entry reservation needed for the Scenic Drive from 8am to 5pm, the drive's winter closing time; Valley of Fire is about an hour north-east; Hoover Dam about 45 minutes south-east. On New Year's Eve the Boulevard closes to vehicles, and in CES week the monorail and rideshares are full at conference hours.

Winter holds both the cheapest and some of the most expensive weeks of the Las Vegas year: the quiet weeks are bargains, while New Year's Eve and CES week can cost several times as much for the same room.

Winter is the best season to eat well in Las Vegas, once you step around the big dates. In the quiet weeks, reservations that need weeks of notice in spring open up with a few days' warning. On a cold evening, the hot-pot and noodle houses of Chinatown, along Spring Mountain Road, give the best value in town.
#Nightlife
The clubs run all winter, with New Year's Eve the biggest night of the year and the rodeo, CES and Super Bowl weekends the busiest after it. The pool and day clubs are closed until spring.
Downtown is at its best in the cool evenings, with live music under the Fremont canopy.

December's holiday shopping gives way to the deepest discounts of the year in January at the two outlet centres north and south of the Strip and in the resort malls. Price tags leave out the sales tax.
#Culture & Etiquette
- Tips are part of the price: 15–20% at a restaurant, a dollar or two for each drink, and cash for the valet and the room attendant.
- Clubs and fine-dining rooms set dress codes, and enforce them at the door.
- No photos at the tables: casinos and players alike object.
- Use coat checks: most large venues have one, and winter makes them worth the few dollars.

#Backup Plans (Cold or Wet Days)
On a cold or wet day, stay inside the connected resorts, whose walkways and bridges link further than most visitors expect, visit the Mob Museum downtown, or book a matinee.
If wind or rain closes the desert: leave the ridges for another day, drive the shore road at Lake Mead or browse the exhibits at Red Rock's visitor centre, and let wet trails dry for a day.
If a big event has filled the Strip: stay downtown or at an off-Strip resort and use the Deuce.

Crowds and police are everywhere on the Strip; after midnight, take a car rather than walking between distant resorts. In the desert, cold air still dries you out, and the light goes early, so carry water and a warm layer and start hikes in the morning.
