The Calendar Is Upside Down, and So Is the Advice
Sydney runs on southern-hemisphere seasons, so Christmas is a beach day and July is the cold month. Most visitors adjust for that within a sentence. The harder adjustment is that the season Sydney is famous for is the one that gives you the least for your money, and the two nobody photographs are the ones the weather favours.
Summer (December to February): The Famous One
Nineteen to 26°C, the harbour at its best, and an evening that stretches past nine. It is also the most expensive and most crowded stretch of the year by a wide margin, with December and January both rated very high, and the New Year fireworks turning one night into a logistical exercise. None of that makes it wrong. It makes it a deliberate choice rather than a default.
The Shoulders Are the Answer
Both shoulders sit at 15 to 24°C. The autumn one keeps the sea warm enough to swim into April; the spring one builds towards summer without the crowd or the price attached to it. October is the specific pick: jacarandas turn whole streets purple, the whale migration passes the coastline close enough to watch from a headland, and hotel rates have not yet climbed. This is where the site’s own verdict and the price data agree.
Winter (June to August) Is Milder Than It Sounds
Ten to 19°C and rarely below ten, which is a Sydney winter in full: cold enough for a coat, never cold enough to stop a coastal walk. August is the quietest month of the year here. Vivid lights the harbour through June, and the whales are still going past. What you do not get is beach weather, and anyone who came for that should not come now.
