CES 2027 runs 6 to 9 January, with media days on 4 and 5 January, the first of them hosted at Mandalay Bay. Registration is already open. The final day closes early, running exhibits only from 09:00 to 16:00.
You almost certainly cannot attend, and that is the useful thing to know. The organiser restricts it to people over eighteen who can produce credentials tying them to the consumer technology industry, and states plainly that it is not open to the general public. What it does to a visitor is entirely indirect and entirely real: it is the week the city is fullest and most expensive, and the week every practical thing about being here becomes harder. Come for it only if you are in the industry. Otherwise, know when it is and book around it.
What CES actually is
The largest trade show the consumer technology industry runs, hosted across the Las Vegas Convention Center and a spread of hotel venues, with the media days a day or two ahead of the exhibits opening. It is organised by the Consumer Technology Association, and it is the single biggest thing that happens to this city in an ordinary year.
The scale matters more than the content. Tens of thousands of delegates arrive at once, take the hotel rooms, the restaurant tables and the taxis, and leave again together. For anyone in town who is not attending, the show itself is invisible and its effects are not.
Where to watch CES
- There is nothing to watch, and no way in without credentials. This is not a spectator event in any sense, and the halls are closed to anyone who has not been approved to attend.
- The convention centre area, if you want to see the scale. The approach to the West Hall is visible from the road and the queues in the morning are striking, but that is the whole of the public experience.
- The Strip in the evenings. The one part a visitor does share is the aftermath: the bars and restaurants along the Strip are full of delegates from late afternoon, and the city has a corporate texture that week that it does not have at any other time.
- Anywhere you had planned to be at short notice. This is the practical version of watching it. Restaurants that take walk-ins in December do not that week, and a taxi rank that is empty in November has a twenty-minute queue.
Tickets and what it costs
Attendance is restricted rather than merely expensive. The organiser requires current industry or media credentials showing an affiliation with the consumer technology sector, sets a minimum age of eighteen with nobody younger admitted at any point, and states that registration will be refused where the credentials do not connect the applicant to the company or the industry they claim.
Registration also asks for a unique email address and a recent photograph, because badges carry photo identification. None of this is negotiable at the door.
Badge pricing exists in tiers for that industry audience and is not the relevant number for a visitor, because the question is eligibility rather than cost.

Getting there
The convention centre sits east of the Strip and is served by its own monorail station, which is the sensible way in and out during the show and is busy in both directions at the start and end of the business day.
The thing a non-attending visitor should plan around is the rhythm rather than the geography. Tens of thousands of people move between the hotels and the convention centre at the same two points of the day, which absorbs the monorail, the buses and the rideshare supply. Journeys that take fifteen minutes in a normal week take three times that.
Hotel rates are the sharper consequence. Rooms that cost a fraction of it a fortnight later run several times their baseline during the show, and the fortnight afterwards is among the cheapest of the entire year. The gap between those two weeks is larger than the gap between most seasons.
Mistakes worth avoiding
Assuming you can buy a ticket
It is trade only, with credentials checked at registration rather than waved through at the door. Turning up hoping to pay your way in does not work.
Booking a Las Vegas holiday for that week by accident
It is the most expensive week of the first half of the year and the least pleasant to move around in. Anyone choosing early January for the weather is better off a fortnight later, when the city is quiet and cheap.
Expecting to eat where you wanted
The restaurants worth booking are taken by corporate dinners for the duration. Book well ahead or plan to eat off the Strip.
Underestimating the taxi queues
The rideshare and taxi supply is absorbed by delegates at predictable hours. Build extra time into anything with a fixed start, an airport transfer most of all.
Bringing children anywhere near the badge process
Nobody under eighteen is admitted at any time, and that is enforced rather than discretionary.
