What that actually means for your trip:
- January is two months in one. The first full week belongs to CES, the technology trade show, and room rates rise accordingly; after it leaves, Las Vegas is at its quietest and cheapest.
- The days are mild and bright; the nights are cold. Afternoons around 15°C are comfortable for walking and hiking, but the dry desert air drops fast after dark, and an evening on the Strip needs a proper coat.
- Snow stays on the mountains. It almost never settles in the valley, but the peaks of the Spring Mountains, visible from the Strip, are white all month.
- The light goes early. Sunset before 5pm shortens the desert days, and pushes more of the month into the hours when the neon is the show.
Is January a good time to visit Las Vegas? Yes, outside CES week. The second half of the month brings the lowest room rates of the year, easy show tickets and restaurant tables, and the best hiking weather in the desert around the city. Avoid the first full week unless you are attending the show.

New Year's Day, Friday 1 January 2027, follows the fireworks over the Strip; the city is busy until the long weekend ends.
CES, the Consumer Electronics Show, fills the Las Vegas Convention Center and much of the Strip from 6 to 9 January 2027, with media days on the 4th and 5th. It is a trade show, open only to industry visitors aged 18 and over, but it owns the week: tens of thousands of delegates take the hotel rooms, the restaurant tables and the rideshares. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Monday 18 January, gives Americans a long weekend and brings a brief rise in visitors. Otherwise, the second half of the month is the year's lull, when the resorts compete for guests.
#What to Do in Las Vegas in January
Solo Travellers
Hike Red Rock Canyon in the morning, with the Calico Tanks trail among the classics, then spend the evening downtown under the Fremont Street canopy and at the Neon Museum, whose boneyard of old signs is lit after dark.
Couples
Book a show in the second half of the month, when the best seats are easiest to get midweek, and dinner in one of the big resorts' fine-dining rooms.
A drive out to Valley of Fire for its red rock and petroglyphs makes a full, quiet day.
Families
Hoover Dam and its tours, the Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay, and the free light-and-water shows of the Bellagio fountains suit a cool January day.
Groups
Take in a hockey game with the Vegas Golden Knights or a big residency show, then the bars of Downtown, where the winter evenings are easier to walk between venues than in summer.
#Getting Around
Harry Reid International Airport is a short drive from the Strip; take a taxi or a rideshare from the designated zones, as there is no rail link.
On the Strip, the Deuce double-decker bus runs day and night along Las Vegas Boulevard, and the Las Vegas Monorail runs behind the resorts on the east side to the Convention Center.
January is the month for walking the Strip in comfort, in sections rather than end to end, because it is longer than it looks.
A hire car earns its keep for the desert: Red Rock Canyon is about 30 minutes west, Valley of Fire about an hour north-east, and Hoover Dam about 45 minutes south-east.

Late January is the best moment of the year to eat well here. The convention crowds and the holiday demand have both gone, and tables that need weeks of notice in spring open up a few days ahead.
Chinatown, on Spring Mountain Road, is the best value in the city, and a hot pot or a bowl of pho in January makes sense in a way it never does in August.
#Nightlife
The clubs run all year, and January is a quieter month for them, with CES week the loud exception. The pool parties and dayclubs are closed until spring.
Downtown comes into its own in winter: live bands under the Fremont canopy, craft-cocktail bars on Fremont East, and a pleasant walk between them.

January is the discount month. The outlet malls north and south of the Strip cut their prices deepest after the holidays, and the resort malls follow. Nevada's sales tax is added at the till, not shown on the price tag.

- Tipping is expected: 15–20% at a restaurant table, a dollar or two a drink, and cash for housekeeping and valets.
- Do not photograph other players at the tables.
- Dress codes are enforced at the clubs and the better restaurants.

On a cold or windy day, stay inside the connected resorts, whose malls, walkways and bridges link further than most visitors expect, or spend an afternoon at the Mob Museum downtown. A matinee show or a long lunch in Chinatown fills the rest.
If the wind is up in the desert: swap an exposed ridge trail for the shoreline of Lake Mead or the visitor centre at Red Rock.
If rain closes a trail: the desert soils turn slippery quickly; wait a day for the paths to dry.

The dry air is the quiet risk: at 15°C you do not feel yourself losing water, and a long trail dehydrates people who would have drunk properly at 35°C. On the day trips, plan around daylight, not temperature. In the city, the Strip is busy and well policed; take a taxi or rideshare rather than walking the quiet gaps between properties late at night.
