- It is the coolest month of the year by day. Afternoons around 14°C are pleasant in the sun, but the dry desert air drops towards freezing after dark, and a night on the Strip needs a warm coat.

The National Finals Rodeo, the championship of professional rodeo, runs for ten nights at the Thomas & Mack Center from 3 to 12 December 2026. It brings a crowd the city sees at no other time of year: western wear in every casino, country music in the bars, and the Cowboy Christmas gift show at the Las Vegas Convention Center during the same days. Hotels near the Strip fill for the whole fortnight.
The holidays follow. The big resorts compete with their Christmas displays, the Bellagio Conservatory among the best known, and they are free to walk through.
Christmas Day, Friday 25 December, is quiet in the city; some shows take a break around it, and the post-Christmas crowds arrive the next day.
New Year's Eve, Thursday 31 December, is the city's biggest night of the year. Las Vegas Boulevard closes to vehicles in the evening, hundreds of thousands of people fill the street, and fireworks launch from resort rooftops at midnight. Solo Travellers
Spend a rodeo night at the Thomas & Mack if you can get a ticket, or join the crowds watching it on the big screens in the Strip's bars.
On a quiet mid-month day, hike Red Rock Canyon and finish with the Neon Museum boneyard after dark.
Couples
Book a show in the quiet middle of the month, when the best seats are easy to get, and a dinner at one of the resorts' fine-dining rooms. A walk through the holiday displays of the Bellagio Conservatory and the Wynn is a free December evening.
Families
The resort Christmas displays, the Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay and a day at Hoover Dam suit a cold December day. Downtown's light show under the Fremont canopy is free.
Groups
The rodeo fortnight is the liveliest time for country bars and western nights; New Year's Eve is the biggest party of the year, with club tickets that sell out well ahead.
#Getting Around
From Harry Reid International Airport, a taxi or rideshare from the marked pick-up zones is the quickest way to your hotel.
Along the Boulevard, the Deuce double-decker runs around the clock, and the Las Vegas Monorail links the east-side resorts with the Convention Center.
Rodeo nights put extra traffic on the roads to the Thomas & Mack Center, on the university campus east of the Strip, and New Year's Eve closes the Boulevard itself. For the desert you need a car.
Red Rock Canyon lies about half an hour west, and its Scenic Drive runs on booked time slots between 8am and 5pm, the hour it shuts in winter.
