The Sea Is Warmest as the City Empties
Barcelona’s best month is not its hottest, and the gap between the two is the single most useful thing to know before booking. The water off Barceloneta peaks in September, weeks after the July and August crush has passed its worst and while the city is still fully open. Almost everything else about timing a trip here follows from that one offset.
Spring and Summer
Spring runs 9 to 23°C with four to six wet days, and by late May the beach is usable. Summer is 18 to 30°C and very dry, at two to four wet days a month. It is also when the city is at its fullest: July and August are both rated very high, and August is when a noticeable share of the places locals eat close for the month.
Autumn and Winter
September is the pick of the year: peak sea temperature, thinning crowds and La Mercè filling the streets with free events. October holds 14 to 23°C and stays swimmable at the start. Winter drops to 6 to 15°C, which is mild rather than warm, and February is the quietest month on the calendar, with the lowest rates and the Modernisme interiors to yourself.
