Las Vegas in May — Travel Guide

May is the last comfortable month and the biggest festival month, and in 2027 those two things collide harder than usual. EDC, the electronic music festival held at the Motor Speedway, expands to two consecutive weekends for the first time in its history: 14 to 16 May and 21 to 23 May 2027. That takes a weekend event and turns it into most of the month.

Underneath it, May is the month Las Vegas hands over to summer.

Afternoons reach about 31°C by the end of it, which is not spring weather by any reasonable definition.

#Weather in Las Vegas in May

Las Vegas in May averages 19–31°C (66–88°F) with around 1 day of rain, and crowds are high.

Days run to around 31°C with nights near 19°C, and the month moves a long way from start to finish. Early May still behaves like April. Late May is the front edge of summer, and June is only days away from thirty-seven.

Rain is essentially absent: one day across the month on average, making May among the driest of the year.

The nights are the saving grace. Even after a hot afternoon it drops enough to make an evening outside pleasant, which stops being true in June.

#What to Do in Las Vegas in May

EDC, if that is the trip. Two weekends in 2027 rather than one, at the Motor Speedway, running through the night. Passes sell by weekend or for both, and the camping option sells separately and early.

The pools, properly open. May is the first month the pool scene runs at full strength with water that is actually warm. The dayclubs are in full season.

The desert, early or not at all. Red Rock about 27 kilometres west and Valley of Fire roughly 80 north-east are still doable in early May at dawn. By late May they need the same discipline as June: first light, plenty of water, short.

Lake Mead. About 50 kilometres south-east, and May is arguably its best month — warm enough to swim, not yet punishing on the drive.

#Getting Around

Early May walks comfortably. By the end of the month, the Strip's 6.8 kilometres want the Deuce or the monorail in the middle of the day rather than your legs.

EDC changes the picture on its weekends. The festival runs at the Motor Speedway about 24 kilometres north of the Strip, overnight rather than in the evening, and the shuttle and rideshare movement happens in the small hours. If you are in town on those weekends and not attending, expect the city to be loud and busy at times it usually is not.

#Budget & Costs

May is expensive at the start and begins to soften at the end, with the EDC weekends as sharp exceptions in the other direction. Those two weekends in 2027 lift rates across the whole city, not only near the Speedway.

The resort fee and 13.38% room tax apply on top of the advertised rate.

Late May, away from a festival weekend, is one of the better value windows in the first half of the year: summer pricing has started to arrive while the weather has not fully turned.

#Food & Dining

Reservations remain spring-difficult in early May and ease slightly as the month goes on and the season turns. The EDC weekends are their own thing and fill the late-night end of the market rather than the dining rooms.

Chinatown on Spring Mountain Road is the value answer as ever, and late May is the last month its patios are pleasant after dark.

#Nightlife

May is when the nightlife calendar peaks. The dayclubs are running, the club residencies are at full strength, and the EDC weekends bring international names into the venues either side of the festival itself.

Downtown stays cheaper and more relaxed, though by late May the walk between venues under the Fremont canopy is warm work.

#Shopping

Full-price spring and early summer stock. The outlets north and south of the Strip remain better value than the resort malls, and sales tax is added at the till.

#Culture & Etiquette

Tipping is expected and structural: fifteen to twenty per cent at a table, a dollar or two a drink, cash for housekeeping.

Casino floors are built to keep you on them, and dress codes at clubs and the better dining rooms are enforced.

May brings festival etiquette into play. EDC runs overnight and its crowd sleeps during the day, which changes the rhythm of the hotels hosting it. If you are not attending and want a quiet morning, that is worth knowing before booking.

#Safety & Health

The heat becomes a genuine risk during May rather than at the end of it. Late-month afternoons are hot enough to matter, the air is dry enough to hide dehydration, and the combination of sun, alcohol and a pool deck is how most visitors get into trouble here.

An overnight festival in a desert is its own case: the temperature swing between three in the afternoon and four in the morning is large, and people dressed for one are rarely dressed for the other.
