What that actually means for your trip:
- May is two months in one. The first week feels like April, warm and fresh; by the last week the afternoons are close to June's heat.
- The nights are perfect. Lows near 19°C make May the last month when dinner outside and a walk after dark are comfortable rather than hot.
- It almost never rains. One wet day in a typical May; the spring winds, which can blow dust across the valley, are more likely to spoil an afternoon.
- The desert closes its window. Early May is still good for hiking at Red Rock and Valley of Fire; late May needs a dawn start.
Is May a good time to visit Las Vegas? Yes, especially in the first half. The pools are open and warm, the nights are mild, and the desert is still walkable in the morning. EDC, the Electric Daisy Carnival, runs across two consecutive weekends in 2027 for the first time: EDC Dusk on 14 to 16 May and EDC Dawn on 21 to 23 May, at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, about 24 km north of the Strip. The festival runs from evening until dawn, and its crowd moves through the city at hours when it is usually quiet. See our EDC guide.
Mother's Day, Sunday 9 May, fills the Strip's brunch rooms and steakhouses, and Memorial Day, Monday 31 May, makes the last weekend of the month a long one: the unofficial start of the American summer, with pool parties across the Strip.
Red Rock Canyon's Scenic Drive still needs a timed-entry reservation between 8am and 5pm until 31 May; after that the season ends until October.
Lake Mead, about 50 km south-east, is warm enough for the beach by late May, and its afternoon breeze makes it more bearable than the canyons.

Solo Travellers
Drive out to Valley of Fire at sunrise for the red sandstone and the petroglyphs at Atlatl Rock, and be back in the city before noon.
In the evening, take the Neon Museum's tour of the boneyard of old casino signs.
Couples
Spend a day at Lake Mead, with a picnic at Boulder Beach and a stop at Hoover Dam on the way back, or book a gondola at the Venetian and dinner on a Strip terrace after sunset, while the evenings are still mild.
Families
Resort pools with lazy rivers and slides are at their best in May, and Springs Preserve has gardens, trails and indoor galleries about the desert, and the Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay is a cool hour on a hot afternoon.
Groups
EDC is the obvious group trip. For anyone else, the dayclubs open their summer seasons, and the Memorial Day weekend is the first big pool-party weekend of the year; reserve cabanas and tables early.
#Getting Around
Harry Reid International Airport is a short taxi or rideshare from the Strip, using the signed pick-up zones. Along the Boulevard, the Deuce runs around the clock, the Las Vegas Monorail links the east-side resorts from the MGM Grand to the Sahara, and free trams and covered walkways join several neighbouring resorts.
For Red Rock, Valley of Fire, Hoover Dam and Lake Mead, you need a car or a tour. Book the Red Rock timed entry on recreation.gov in advance, and carry more water than you think you will need.
On EDC nights, the routes north to the Speedway are busy from late afternoon, and the official festival shuttles run from the resorts; rideshare queues after the last set are long.

May is a good month for the Strip's terraces and patios, which become too hot by day in June. Book a table for sunset, around 7:30pm, and eat outside while it is still pleasant. For value, Chinatown on Spring Mountain Road has the city's best cheap dinners.

The nightclubs are busy on EDC weekends, with festival DJs playing sets in the city, and the dayclubs are in full swing from Thursday to Sunday.
Fremont Street downtown has live music under its canopy, and May evenings there are warm but not yet stifling.

The resort malls are the comfortable choice, especially in the afternoon, and the Las Vegas North and South Premium Outlets are cheaper; go in the morning, before the car parks heat up. Price tags exclude Clark County's sales tax, which the till adds.

- Carry small notes: servers expect 15–20%, bartenders about a dollar or two a drink, and the pool and housekeeping staff a few dollars.

Heat becomes a real risk during May, especially in the last two weeks, and the desert air dries sweat as fast as it forms, so thirst arrives late. Drink before you feel the need, take the hottest hours indoors, and stop if you feel dizzy, sick or headachy, the early signs of heat exhaustion. In the desert, start at dawn, tell someone your route and carry far more water than you expect to use. At an overnight festival, the drop in temperature between afternoon and dawn is large.
