Autumn is a window opening. September is still summer wearing a different name, with afternoons around 35°C and pools running at full tilt. By October the heat has genuinely broken and the city arrives at 27°C days and 15°C nights, which is the best combination of numbers Las Vegas produces all year. November settles cooler again, mild and quiet, with the desert at its most comfortable.

Which means autumn asks the opposite question from spring. In spring you are working out how early to come before the heat arrives. Here you are working out how late to leave it.

#Weather in Las Vegas in Autumn

Las Vegas in Autumn averages 15–27°C (59–81°F) with around 2 days of rain, and crowds are high.

The season runs 15°C at night to 27°C by afternoon as an average, and that average conceals a large move. September still reaches 35°C and belongs, honestly, to summer. October comes in at 27°C. November drops to 20°C with nights close to 9°C.

Rain stays minimal at about two days a month throughout. Early autumn can still catch the tail of the summer monsoon, which arrives as a short violent thunderstorm rather than a wet day, occasionally enough to flood an underpass for an hour.

The light is the part nobody mentions in the forecast. The sun sits lower from October, the glare that flattens everything in July softens, and the mountains around the valley stop being a haze and become scenery.

#What to Do in Las Vegas in Autumn

The desert, without the compromise. Red Rock Canyon about 27 kilometres west, Valley of Fire roughly 80 kilometres north-east, and Hoover Dam around 50 kilometres south-east are all comfortable from October and genuinely enjoyable in November. The autumn light is the best of the year for the red rock, which photographs badly under a July sun and well under an October one.

The last of the pool season. Most resort pools run into October and the dayclubs wind down through September. If the pool is the point of the trip, early autumn is the last chance.

Walking the Strip after dark. From October the evening is the best part of the day rather than the only tolerable one.

Race weekends at the Motor Speedway. The Speedway sits about 24 kilometres north of the Strip and its autumn weekend fills the city.

#Getting Around

From October this is a walking city again. The Strip's 6.8 kilometres can be taken in sections on foot without it being an ordeal, and the distances between resorts — deceptive in any season — stop mattering so much when the walk is pleasant.

The Deuce and the monorail run as always. Rideshare demand climbs around the large autumn conventions and around race weekends at the Motor Speedway, when surge pricing can outrun the cost of wherever you are going.

September is the exception and should be planned as a summer month: indoors, air-conditioned, and short outdoor legs only.

#Budget & Costs

Autumn sits high but below spring. October and November carry a heavy convention calendar that lifts midweek rates in a way most seasons do not, so the usual advice to travel midweek works less well here than at other times of year. September is the cheapest of the three by some margin, and it is cheap for the same reason August is.

The constants apply: a compulsory resort fee the advertised rate excludes, and 13.38% room tax inside the main resort corridor.

Thanksgiving week is its own event, with rates and restaurant prices to match.

#Food & Dining

Autumn brings the restaurants back within reach. September is quiet enough that walk-ins occasionally work, and while October and November tighten up again with the convention calendar, they never reach the difficulty of spring.

Chinatown on Spring Mountain Road is the best value eating in the city and the patios come back into use from October.

The one caution is Thanksgiving week in late November, when the good rooms move to fixed menus and book out well in advance.

#Nightlife

The dayclub season ends and the indoor clubs take over, which is a straightforward handover rather than a quiet period. Residencies run through autumn and the venues are busy without the summer crush.

Downtown remains the cheaper and often better version, and from October the walk between bars under the Fremont canopy is part of the appeal rather than something to endure.

#Shopping

The malls and outlets run through the season, with the first proper discounting arriving in late November rather than earlier. Sales tax is added at the till.

#Culture & Etiquette

The tipping expectations do not shift with the season: fifteen to twenty per cent at a table, a dollar or two a drink, cash for housekeeping.

Casino floors are still built to keep you on them, photography of other players is still unwelcome, and dress codes at clubs and the better dining rooms are still enforced.

Autumn adds a small practical one. From late October the evenings cool quickly once the sun goes down, and the city's interiors stay warm, so you end up carrying a layer you only want outdoors.

#Safety & Health

September should be treated as a summer month for health purposes. The heat is still capable of causing real trouble, dry air still hides dehydration, and a car interior still becomes dangerous within minutes.

From October the risk shifts to the day trips. Desert temperatures fall quickly once the sun drops, the days shorten noticeably through November, and a trail that was comfortable at two in the afternoon is cold and dark by six. Carry a layer and start back earlier than feels necessary.

In the city, the ordinary rules hold: busy and policed on the Strip, quieter than it looks in the gaps between properties.
