- Warm, not hot. The warmest month averages about 23°C, and older hotels often have no air conditioning, which matters only in a short heatwave.
- Summer is wetter than spring. Showers are frequent, often brief, and a dry morning can turn into a wet afternoon.
- The days are extraordinarily long. Around the solstice the sun sets after 10pm and the sky stays light for another hour, so evenings are the best part of the day.
- The sea breeze keeps it fresh. Even on warm days, a jacket is useful on the water or after dark.

The Holland Festival of theatre, music and dance usually runs through the month, and the open-air theatre in the Vondelpark begins its free summer programme.
July opens with Keti Koti on 1 July, the commemoration and celebration of the abolition of slavery in Suriname and the Dutch Caribbean, with a ceremony and festival in the Oosterpark. The school holidays begin, and the city is at its busiest.

Solo Travellers
Book the Rijksmuseum or the Van Gogh Museum for the first slot of the day, before the crowds, then spend the long evening on a terrace or at a free concert in the Vondelpark open-air theatre.
Couples
Hire a small boat for a sunset trip on the canals, eat dinner outside at eight and stay till the light goes, and cycle to the beach at Zandvoort, half an hour away by train.
Families
Artis zoo, the NEMO roof terrace, the Amsterdamse Bos, with its goat farm and boating lake, and the free ferry to Noord make summer days easy. Swimming spots in the city's lakes are popular in hot spells.
Groups
Pride week, the Canal Parade, and the outdoor festivals at the parks and in Noord make summer the city's party season. Book festival tickets and boats early.
#Getting Around
Schiphol has frequent trains to Amsterdam Centraal, a journey of about 15 to 20 minutes, and a contactless bank card or phone pays the fare on trains and on the city's trams, buses and metro. The ferries across the IJ to Noord are free.
Summer is the season for cycling and the busiest for the bike lanes; if you are not used to city traffic, start on a quiet Sunday morning. Large tour boats, hop-on-hop-off boats and small rental boats are three different things; choose by what you want, commentary, transport or freedom.
