#At a Glance
October is when Amsterdam goes back indoors, and does it well. The concert halls, theatres and clubs are deep into their season, the canal elms turn yellow in the middle of the month, and the city fills twice: for the autumn school holiday, which for most of the country runs 16 to 24 October 2027, and for the Amsterdam Dance Event, the electronic music festival that takes over the clubs for five days in the second half of the month.
On Sunday 31 October the clocks go back, and the evening is an hour shorter from that night on.
#Weather in Amsterdam in October
Amsterdam in October averages 8–15°C (46–59°F) with around 12 days of rain, and crowds are low-medium.
| October | |
|---|---|
| Daytime high | About 15°C / 59°F |
| Overnight low | About 8°C / 46°F |
| Wet days | About 12 |
| Sunset | 7:19pm on the 1st, 6:47pm on the 15th, 6:16pm on the 30th, 5:14pm on the 31st |
Figures are KNMI 1991–2020 normals for Amsterdam Schiphol; sunset times are calculated for the city centre, and the clocks go back an hour on Sunday 31 October 2027.
What that actually means for your trip:
- It is cool, not cold. Fifteen degrees in the afternoon is jacket weather, and the evenings are damp.
- The rain settles in. October rain tends to sit over the city for half a day rather than blowing through in a shower, so plan an indoor half for most days.
- The first autumn gales arrive. A westerly storm can strip the leaves in a night and stop the IJ ferries for a few hours.
- The light goes earlier every week, and then by a whole hour on the 31st.
Is October a good time to visit Amsterdam? Yes, for culture and value: the museums are quieter than in summer, the concert and club seasons are at full strength, and rooms cost less, except in the dance festival week. Bring a rain jacket and accept that some days will be grey.
#The Month's Two Busy Weeks
The autumn half-term, herfstvakantie, is when Dutch families travel. The government's advised dates for 2027 put the north and middle of the country, Amsterdam included, on holiday from 16 to 24 October, and the south from 23 to 31 October. That week NEMO, ARTIS, the Rijksmuseum and the zoo fill with children, and family-friendly restaurants book up; adult-only plans are better in the first or last week.
The Amsterdam Dance Event, ADE, is one of the world's biggest electronic music gatherings: daytime conferences and hundreds of club nights across the city over five days, from a Wednesday to a Sunday in the second half of the month. In 2026 it ran from 21 to 25 October; the 2027 dates are announced by the organiser. Hotels fill and rates jump citywide that week, whether or not you are going.
The TCS Amsterdam Marathon closes roads on a Sunday in the middle of the month, usually the third; it was on 18 October in 2026, and the 2027 date had not been published in October 2026.
#What to Do in Amsterdam in October
Solo Travellers
Book a weekday slot at the Rijksmuseum or the Stedelijk, both quieter now than in summer, and take a concert at the Concertgebouw, whose season is in full swing; the free Wednesday lunchtime concerts it has held in recent seasons are worth checking for. If you are here for ADE, the daytime conference and the smaller club nights reward going alone.
Couples
Walk the canals of the Jordaan and the Western Islands in the middle of the month, when the elms along the water turn yellow, and stop at a brown café, the old wood-panelled pubs, when the rain comes. In the evening, take a covered canal boat, warmer and drier than an open one, and dinner in De Pijp.
Families
The autumn half-term is the city's family week: NEMO, the science museum, ARTIS, the zoo, and Micropia beside it are all at their busiest, so book ahead.
On dry days the Amsterdamse Bos, the big forest park south of the city, has paths, a goat farm and pancakes, and its trees colour in the middle weeks of the month.
Groups
ADE is the obvious group trip, but book everything months ahead; outside that week, Paradiso and the Melkweg run full gig programmes, and the beer halls and tasting rooms of Noord, across the IJ, are good for a group evening.
#Getting Around
The train from Schiphol is the quickest way into town, and you pay for it, and every tram, bus and metro ride after it, by tapping a contactless bank card or phone at the gate.
Cycling is still pleasant on dry days, but wet leaves and tram rails are slippery, so cross rails at a sharp angle; bike lights are compulsory after dark, and rental bikes should have them fitted.
The free IJ ferries cross to Noord; on marathon Sunday, check which tram routes are diverted.
#Budget & Costs
| Travel style | Per day | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Budget | €105–160 | Hostel or simple hotel, café meals, trams |
| Mid-range | €210–330 | A canal-ring hotel, a museum, a restaurant dinner |
| Luxury | €500+ | A grand hotel, a tasting menu, concert seats |
Costs worth knowing:
| What | Price |
|---|---|
| City tourist tax | 12.5% of the room price in 2026; a rise to 16% from 2027 has been proposed |
| Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh, Stedelijk | About €20–25 each |
| IJ ferries from Centraal | Free |
| ADE week hotel rates | Often double the rest of the month |
Where the money actually goes:
- ADE week is the expensive one, across the whole city.
- The first and last weeks of the month are the best value.
- The tax is charged on the room price, so dearer nights cost more tax too; check the 2027 rate when you book.
- Concerts and clubs are where an October budget goes, not the weather.
October is good value as long as you avoid the festival week: the city at the start of its cultural season, at prices well below summer.
#Food & Dining
Dutch winter food returns in October: erwtensoep, a split-pea soup so thick it sets as it cools, and stamppot, mash with curly kale and a smoked sausage, are back on café menus, and mussels from Zeeland are in season. Restaurants are easier to book than in summer, except in ADE week and the half-term, when the family-friendly places fill.
#Nightlife
October is one of the best months of the year for a night out. The club season is at full strength, ADE fills the city's venues with names from around the world, and the gig venues, Paradiso and the Melkweg among them, are busy every night. The brown cafés and wine bars are warm, and the weather stops mattering once you are through the door.
#Shopping
Autumn stock is in, and De 9 Straatjes, the Nine Streets, are close enough together to shop between showers, and the department stores around Kalverstraat take care of a wet afternoon.
The Noordermarkt on Saturdays and the Albert Cuyp market in De Pijp, Monday to Saturday, are quieter than in summer.
#Culture & Etiquette
- Watch the bike lane. Cyclists do not slow for pedestrians, and in the dark they are hard to see.
- Carry a hooded coat, not an umbrella. Dutch wind wrecks umbrellas.
- Book museums online, and check which ones are busiest in half-term.
- Directness is normal: a short answer is not rude.
- Check your coat in concert halls and theatres; it is expected.
#Essential Local Phrases
| Dutch | Meaning | When to use |
|---|---|---|
| Het regent | It is raining | About twelve days this month |
| Heeft u een tafel binnen? | Do you have an indoor table? | When the terrace is wet |
| Waar is de garderobe? | Where is the cloakroom? | Concert halls and clubs |
| Fietsverlichting | Bike lights | Check before you ride off |
| Erwtensoep | Split-pea soup | Back on menus this month |
| Tot ziens | Goodbye | Leaving anywhere |
#Packing List
- A hooded waterproof jacket, not an umbrella
- Waterproof shoes that grip on wet cobbles
- A warm layer for evenings and boats
- Something for a night out, if the clubs or concerts are on the list
- A bag that closes, for crowded trams and festival nights
- A contactless card, which is also the transport ticket
#Backup Plans (Wet Days and Storms)
If it rains all day: pair a big museum, the Rijksmuseum or the Van Gogh Museum, with a small one, such as the Wereldmuseum Amsterdam, formerly the Tropenmuseum, or the photography museum Foam.
If a storm stops the ferries: skip Noord for the day; the Eye Filmmuseum will still be there tomorrow.
If you want to be warm: the glasshouses of the Hortus Botanicus, or an afternoon concert.
#Safety & Health
Wet surfaces cause more visitor injuries in autumn than anything else: wet leaves on bike paths, slippery bridges and tram rails.
Canal edges are unfenced and dark earlier every week. In ADE week the crowds bring pickpockets and the usual festival risks; look after your drinks and your friends, and call 112 in an emergency.
