What that actually means for your trip:
- It is cold and damp, rarely frozen. The North Sea keeps most days a few degrees above zero; the wind off the water is what makes it feel colder than the thermometer says.
- The days are short. About eight hours of daylight at the start of the month and nearly nine by the end; plan one or two things a day and let the evenings take care of themselves.
- Rain is light but frequent. Twelve wet days, usually drizzle or passing showers, so a waterproof coat matters more than an umbrella in the wind.
- Ice and snow are the exception. A cold snap can bring frost and the odd dusting of snow, which makes bridges and quaysides slippery.
Is January a good time to visit Amsterdam? Yes, for museums, cafés and value. After New Year the city empties, the great museums are at their quietest, restaurants have tables, and hotel rates are at their lowest of the year. Come in the first half of the month to catch the Light Festival's last nights. It is not the month for cycling around in comfort or sitting by the canals, so plan for indoors, with a walk between showers.

New Year is celebrated late into the night, and 1 January is a public holiday when the city sleeps in. The first weekend still has holiday visitors; after that, the month is the quietest of the year.
The Amsterdam Light Festival keeps its artworks along the canals until Sunday 17 January 2027, the last nights of its fifteenth edition. The walking route is free, and the boat tours are ticketed and far easier to book than in December. See our Amsterdam Light Festival guide.
National Tulip Day usually falls on the third Saturday of January, when growers plant a picking garden of some 200,000 tulips on Museumplein and visitors may pick a free bunch from 1pm; in 2026 it was on 17 January, and on the same pattern 2027's would be 16 January, so check the announcement nearer the time.
The January sales run all month in the Nine Streets and on Kalverstraat.

Solo Travellers
Spend a morning in the Rijksmuseum while it is quiet, and an afternoon in a brown café with a book; then walk the last nights of the Light Festival.
The Stedelijk and the Eye Filmmuseum, across the IJ by free ferry, fill a wet day.
Couples
A canal-house hotel in the Jordaan, a candlelit dinner and a boat tour with a heated cabin make January romantic rather than bleak. Book a table at a restaurant you could never get into in summer.
Families
NEMO, the science museum in the green ship-shaped building, Artis zoo and the Hortus Botanicus glasshouses suit cold days.
The outdoor ice rink at Jaap Eden is open through the winter.
Groups
Shop the sales, eat stamppot in a café, and spend the evening at a concert at Paradiso or Melkweg. A tasting at a distillery or a brewery in a former industrial building makes an indoor afternoon.
#Getting Around
Trains from Schiphol reach Amsterdam Centraal in about 15 to 20 minutes, and you can tap in and out with a contactless bank card. In the city, trams, buses and the metro take the same card, and the free ferries behind Centraal cross the IJ to Noord around the clock.
January is the month to choose the tram over a hire bike. If you do cycle, front and rear lights are required by law after dark, which falls before 5pm, and bridges and tram rails are slippery in the wet.

January is the season for Dutch winter food: erwtensoep, a thick pea soup with sausage, and stamppot, mashed potato with kale or sauerkraut and a smoked sausage. Both are cheap and filling, and brown cafés serve them at lunchtime.
The oliebollen stalls of December close in the first days of the month.
Restaurants have space at short notice, even the ones booked weeks ahead in summer. Many close for a week or two of holiday in early January, so check before travelling across the city.

Darkness falls before 5pm, so the evening starts early and runs late.
Paradiso and Melkweg run full concert programmes, the clubs are busy at weekends with locals rather than visitors, and the brown cafés are at their cosiest.

If the cold snaps: stay off canal ice, however solid it looks, and spend the day in the Hortus Botanicus glasshouses.

Wet and frosty bridges cause more visitor falls in January than anything else. Canal edges are unfenced and poorly lit after dark, which comes in mid-afternoon, so keep to the inside of the quayside. Never walk on canal ice. Pickpockets work the crowds around Centraal and the Light Festival route.
