Figures are KNMI 1991–2020 normals for Amsterdam Schiphol.

What that actually means for your trip:

  • This is the best weather of the spring. Afternoons in the high teens, sometimes the low twenties, with April's low rain count and four more degrees.
  • The evenings are the gift. Sunset moves from about 9pm to nearly 10pm, and the sky stays light for a while after that.
  • The nights are still cool. Single figures after dark are normal in the first half of the month; bring a layer for a canal boat.
  • The month is broken up by holidays. Remembrance and Liberation on the 4th and 5th, Ascension on the 6th and Whitsun on the 16th and 17th each bring Dutch visitors into the city.

Is May a good time to visit Amsterdam? Yes, and for many people it is the best month of the year. The weather is mild, the parks are green, the terraces run late into the light, and the tulip crowds have mostly gone after the first week. Plan around two things: the two minutes of silence at 8pm on 4 May, which asks something of every visitor, and the holiday weekends, when hotels fill and prices rise. The quietest stretch is the week between Ascension and Whitsun.

#May in the city

Remembrance Day, Dodenherdenking, falls on Tuesday 4 May 2027. Flags fly at half-mast from 6pm, and at 8pm the whole country stops for two minutes of silence in memory of the war dead: trams and trains halt, cafés go quiet, people stand still in the street. The national ceremony, with the King, is at the National Monument on the Dam, which fills long before eight. For a visitor this is the one moment of the year when the city asks you to take part.

Liberation Day, Bevrijdingsdag, follows on Wednesday 5 May, and the mood turns: free festivals run in every province to celebrate the end of the German occupation in 1945, with music from the afternoon into the night. Liberation Day is a public holiday, though many employers give the day off only once every five years, so 2027 is a working day for many Dutch people.

Ascension Day, Hemelvaartsdag, is Thursday 6 May, and many people take the Friday off too, which makes a long weekend; Keukenhof closes for the season on Sunday 9 May, so that weekend is its last. Whit Sunday and Whit Monday, Pinksteren, fall on 16 and 17 May.

National Mill Day, the Nationale Molendag, is usually held on the second weekend of May, which in 2027 would be 8 and 9 May; check the date and the list of open mills before you go. Hundreds of windmills open to visitors, many with their sails turning. In Amsterdam, look for De Gooyer, beside the Brouwerij 't IJ brewery, and the Molen van Sloten on the western edge of the city; Zaanse Schans, with its row of working mills, is 20 minutes away by train.

Solo Travellers

Spend a morning in the Anne Frank House, the visit that gives the 4 May silence its meaning, then walk the Western Islands, a quiet corner of old warehouses north of the Jordaan. In the evening, sit on a terrace by the water; at the end of the month it stays light until almost ten.

Couples

Take a small open boat out on the canals after dinner, when the light is long and gold.

On a fine day, cycle along the Amstel to Ouderkerk aan de Amstel for lunch by the river.

Families

Visit a turning windmill on the mill weekend, or Zaanse Schans any day, where children can see a working mill and a clog maker.

Artis zoo and the playgrounds and paddling areas of the Vondelpark fill on warm afternoons.

Groups

Join a Liberation Day festival on the 5th, then end the day on the terraces of De Pijp.

A day hiring boats on the Amstel or the lakes of the Amsterdamse Bos is a classic group plan in fine weather.

#Getting Around

Schiphol is a short train ride from Centraal, and you pay for that and for every tram, bus and metro ride by tapping a bank card or phone at the gate. The free IJ ferries cross the water to Amsterdam Noord, and Zaanse Schans is a short train ride to Zaandijk Zaanse Schans station and a short walk.

May is the best month for a bike. The days are long, the wind is lighter than in March and April, and a ride along the Amstel to Ouderkerk aan de Amstel, or north through the polders to the villages of Waterland, makes a day out of the city.

Public transport stops briefly during the 8pm silence on 4 May, then runs as normal.

#Budget & Costs

Travel style Per day What it covers
Budget €95–160 Hostel bed, market lunches, a hired bike
Mid-range €220–360 Hotel in De Pijp or Oud-West, a museum, dinner on a terrace
Luxury €560+ Top hotel, tasting menu, private boat

May is a high-season month, with rates that rise over the Liberation, Ascension and Whitsun weekends and ease midweek between them.

Costs worth knowing:

What Price
Tourist tax 12.5% of the room price in 2026; the 2027 rate follows the city budget
Liberation Day festivals Free
Ferries across the IJ Free
Mill visits on mill weekend Often free, sometimes a small donation
A small electric rental boat About €100–150 for a couple of hours, shared
  • Book the holiday weekends early.
  • Stay midweek between Ascension and Whitsun for the best value.
  • Book museum slots online, especially for the Anne Frank House.

#Food & Dining

May is the height of the white asparagus season, and Dutch menus give it a page of its own: served with ham, a boiled egg and melted butter or hollandaise. It is cheaper and better now than in April, and the season ends in late June. Strawberries from the Dutch glasshouses and fields are on the market stalls.

Eat outside: by late May dinner on a terrace stays light until the coffee arrives. Book tables for the holiday weekends.

#Nightlife

The long evenings push everything later. Terraces fill until the light goes, after 9pm, and the bars and clubs get going after that. Liberation Day is the biggest night of the month, with festival crowds coming back into the city late.

On 4 May the mood is quieter, and some venues start their programmes only after the commemoration.

#Shopping

The Noordermarkt on Saturdays, with its organic stalls, and the Albert Cuyp market in De Pijp are pleasant in the long, warm daylight.

The Nine Streets have the independent shops, and many shops open on the holiday Mondays, though often with shorter hours.

#Culture & Etiquette

  • Keep the two minutes' silence at 8pm on 4 May, wherever you are.
  • Do not treat 4 May as a party: the mood that evening is solemn until the silence ends, and the celebration waits for the 5th.
  • Keep off the cycle lanes on foot; they are busiest in fine weather.
  • Lower your voice near the monuments on 4 May, at the Dam and at the many small neighbourhood memorials.

#Essential Local Phrases

Dutch Meaning When to use
Twee minuten stilte Two minutes' silence At 8pm on 4 May
Fijne Bevrijdingsdag Happy Liberation Day On 5 May
Is de molen open? Is the mill open? On the mill weekend
Een lentebok, graag A spring bock, please At a brown café
Mogen we buiten zitten? May we sit outside? Every warm evening
Asperges White asparagus On every May menu

#Packing List

  • A light waterproof jacket for showers
  • A warm layer for cool evenings on the water
  • Comfortable shoes for long walks
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen; the sun is strong by late May
  • Respectful, quiet clothes if you plan to attend a 4 May ceremony
  • Antihistamines for the grass pollen season
  • A bank card or phone that pays by tap

#Backup Plans

If the day turns wet: cross the IJ on the free ferry to the Eye Filmmuseum for its exhibitions and a film, or spend a slow afternoon at H'ART Museum, the former Hermitage, on the Amstel.

If the holiday weekend fills the city: take the train to Haarlem or Utrecht, or spend a day in the windmill villages of the Zaan.

If you missed Keukenhof: the bulb season is over after the first week of May, but the glasshouses and gardens of the Hortus Botanicus are in full spring growth.

#Safety & Health

May's risks are the ordinary ones: bikes, tram rails and unfenced canal edges, more dangerous after a drink on a long evening. Liberation Day festivals are crowded and alcohol-heavy. The sun is stronger than the temperature suggests at this latitude, so use sunscreen on a boat. The grass pollen season starts in May.

Emergency: 112.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is May a good time to visit Amsterdam?

Yes, and for many people it is the best month of the year: highs around 18°C, about nine wet days, and sunset moving from 9pm to nearly 10pm. Hotels fill over the Liberation Day and Ascension weekend and again at Whitsun, so the midweek days between those holidays are the calmest and best value.

What happens on 4 and 5 May in the Netherlands?

On Tuesday 4 May 2027 the country remembers its war dead, with two minutes of silence at 8pm when trams, trains and conversations stop. On Wednesday 5 May, Liberation Day, free festivals in every province celebrate the end of the German occupation in 1945, with music into the night.

What should I do during the two minutes of silence?

Stop where you are, stay quiet and put your phone away until the two minutes are over. Flags fly at half-mast from 6pm and the national ceremony is on the Dam, but any quiet street gives you the silence, and a visitor who carries on as normal causes real offence.

Is Keukenhof still open in May?

Only until Sunday 9 May 2027, the last day of its season, and by then most of the fields around Lisse are past their peak. For a different Dutch spring sight, National Mill Day is usually held on the second weekend of May, when hundreds of windmills open to visitors.

What’s the weather like in Amsterdam in May?

Amsterdam in May typically sees temperatures of 9–18°C with around 9 days of rain across the period. Pack lightweight layers that suit both cooler mornings and warmer afternoons.

How much does it cost to visit Amsterdam in May?

Budget-conscious travellers can expect daily costs of €120–180, covering accommodation, food, and local transport. Prices climb during peak weeks — book early to lock in the lower end of this range.
