Figures are KNMI 1991–2020 normals for Amsterdam Schiphol.

What that actually means for your trip:

  • August is as warm as July and a little wetter. Afternoons in the low twenties, with a shower on most second or third days, usually short.
  • The evenings shrink quickly. Sunset moves from half past nine to half past eight over the month, so the boat-at-nine evenings of early August are gone by the end.
  • The month splits in two. The first half has Pride and the full summer crowd; after the Dutch holidays end on 22 August, the city quietens and prices start to fall.
  • Air conditioning is still rare. A warm spell in an old canal house can mean a hot night; ask before booking a top-floor room.

Is August a good time to visit Amsterdam? Yes, for summer life on the water and the city's biggest celebration, the Canal Parade on 7 August. It is also among the busiest and dearest months, and the wettest of the summer. For a calmer trip with the same warmth, come in the last ten days, when the Dutch families are home, the parade crowds have gone and hotel rates begin to drop.

#August in the city

Pride Amsterdam, a week of events from 31 July 2027, ends with the Canal Parade on Saturday 7 August, from about noon to 6pm. About eighty decorated boats set off from the Oosterdok, turn up the Amstel by way of the Nieuwe Herengracht and follow the Prinsengracht to the Westerdok, and hundreds of thousands of people watch from the quays and bridges. Watching is free. See our Pride Amsterdam guide.

The Grachtenfestival, the canal festival, fills about ten days in mid-August with classical music, much of it free or cheap, in canal-house drawing rooms, churches and on stages by and on the water. Its 2027 dates and programme are published by the festival in advance.

The Dutch school holidays end on 22 August 2027 in the northern region, which includes Amsterdam, on 29 August in the middle of the country and on 5 September in the south.

Solo Travellers

Take in a Grachtenfestival concert in a canal house, book the first slot of the morning at the Rijksmuseum, and on a dry evening walk the quieter western canals, the Brouwersgracht and the Bloemgracht.

Couples

Take a boat out at golden hour early in the month, while sunset still comes after nine, and book a canal-side table for dinner afterwards.

Families

On a hot day, head for the beach at Zandvoort, half an hour by train, or one of the city's swimming lakes; on a wet day, NEMO and the Wereldmuseum, formerly the Tropenmuseum, fill the afternoon.

Groups

The Canal Parade weekend is the party of the summer, with street parties across the centre. On any other weekend, a boat for the group on the Amstel or a beach day at Bloemendaal, near Zandvoort, with its beach clubs, is the classic plan.

#Getting Around

Trains from Schiphol take about fifteen minutes to Centraal, and you pay on trains, trams, buses and the metro by tapping a contactless card or phone. The ferries across the IJ to Amsterdam Noord are free.

On Canal Parade day, the canal belt closes to boat traffic and the streets beside the route fill from late morning; trams through the centre are diverted. The way to get around that day is on foot.

#Budget & Costs

Travel style Per day What it covers
Budget €115–180 Hostel bed, market food, a hired bike
Mid-range €260–400 Canal-belt hotel, a museum, a canal-festival concert
Luxury €620+ Canal-house suite, a chef's table, a skippered salon boat

August is peak season until the parade weekend, then eases; the last week is noticeably cheaper.

Costs worth knowing:

What Price
Tourist tax 12.5% of the room price in 2026; the 2027 rate follows the city budget
Canal Parade Free to watch
Grachtenfestival Many concerts free, others ticketed
Rijsttafel for two Priced per person, usually for a minimum of two
Ferries across the IJ Free
  • Book Pride week hotels months ahead.
  • Come after 22 August for lower rates.
  • Reserve boats a few days ahead.

#Food & Dining

A tray of cleaned raw herring fillets

Herring from the fish stalls is still at its summer best, and the markets are full of Dutch strawberries and plums.

Amsterdam's Indonesian restaurants, a legacy of the colonial past, are a reliable booking when the canal-side terraces are full; order a rijsttafel, the rice table of many small dishes, to share.

Some independent restaurants close for a week or two in August, so check before you go.

#Nightlife

Pride week brings parties across the city, centred on the Reguliersdwarsstraat and the Zeedijk. The terraces stay busy until they close, and festivals fill the parks at the city's edge most weekends. By the end of the month, the light goes before nine, and the evening starts earlier.

#Shopping

Go to the Albert Cuyp and the Waterlooplein flea market in the first hour, when the stalls are full and the lanes still passable. The summer sales end and the autumn stock arrives in the last week, and a few independent shops close for the owner's summer holiday.

#Culture & Etiquette

  • Respect the parade's purpose: Pride is a celebration and a demonstration for equal rights.
  • Open drinks are not allowed on the streets of the red-light district and other parts of the centre.
  • Keep the noise down late at night: people live above the bars.
  • Keep off the cycle lanes on foot.

#Essential Local Phrases

Dutch Meaning When to use
Fijne Pride! Happy Pride! During Pride week
Waar is de botenparade? Where is the boat parade? On 7 August
Het regent pijpenstelen It's raining pipe stems (cats and dogs) In an August shower
Een rijsttafel voor twee A rice table for two At an Indonesian restaurant

#Packing List

  • A light rain jacket; August is the wettest summer month
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses
  • A sweater for the cooler late-August nights
  • Comfortable shoes for crowds and long walks
  • Swimwear for the beach
  • A small bag that closes, for the parade crowds
  • A contactless card or phone for transport

#Backup Plans

If it rains: visit the Wereldmuseum in the east or Micropia, the museum of microbes beside Artis; both are a short tram ride apart.

If the centre is overrun on parade day: spend it in Amsterdam Noord across the IJ, or at the Amsterdamse Bos.

If a heatwave arrives: go to the beach early, spend the afternoon in an air-conditioned museum and come out again after six.

#Safety & Health

The Canal Parade puts hundreds of thousands of people on unfenced quays for hours: watch children closely, keep away from the very edge, and keep your phone and wallet in a closed bag. Skippers of rental boats are held to the same alcohol limit as drivers, and the canals are not for swimming: use the official swimming spots.

Emergency: 112.
