Figures are KNMI 1991–2020 normals for Amsterdam Schiphol.
What that actually means for your trip:
- This is the warmest month, and it is still mild. Afternoons in the low twenties are the norm; a few days most summers pass 30°C, and those are the days that matter.
- Air conditioning is rare. Canal houses and older hotels were built for cool summers, so in a heatwave a top-floor room can be hot at night; check before booking.
- It rains more than in spring. Eleven wet days, usually as short heavy showers between sunny spells, so carry a light jacket even on a bright morning.
- The evenings shorten, slowly. Sunset moves back from just after 10pm to about half past nine, still late enough for dinner in daylight.
Is July a good time to visit Amsterdam? Yes, for summer at its fullest: warm evenings, boats on every canal, festivals in the parks and the beach half an hour away. The trade-off is crowds and price. The Dutch school holidays begin on 10 July in the Amsterdam region, the rest of Europe arrives at the same time, and Pride begins on the last day of the month. The first ten days are the calmest and cheapest part of the month.
#July in the city
Keti Koti, on Thursday 1 July 2027, marks the day in 1863 when slavery ended in Suriname and on the Dutch Caribbean islands. The national commemoration is held at the slavery monument in the Oosterpark, in recent years preceded by a procession from the Waterlooplein, and a free festival fills the park for the rest of the day. The name means "chains broken" in Sranan Tongo.
The school holidays begin on 10 July 2027 in the northern region, which includes Amsterdam, on 17 July in the middle of the country and on 24 July in the south. By the second half of the month, Dutch families are away and visitors from across Europe have taken their place.
Pride Amsterdam opens on Saturday 31 July 2027 with the Pride Walk and Park Pride at the Vondelpark open-air theatre, and builds to the Canal Parade of decorated boats on Saturday 7 August. See our Pride Amsterdam guide.
#What to Do in Amsterdam in July
Solo Travellers
Join the Keti Koti procession and the festival in the Oosterpark on 1 July, take the first morning slot at the Rijksmuseum to beat the summer crowds, and spend a long evening on a terrace by the Amstel.
Couples
Hire a small electric boat for an evening on the canals, take the train to Zandvoort for a swim and dinner at a beach pavilion, and walk back along the canals after sunset.
Families
Spend a day at the beach, or at one of the city's swimming lakes; NEMO, Artis zoo and Het Scheepvaartmuseum, the maritime museum with its replica sailing ship, fill rainy afternoons; the free children's shows at the Vondelpark open-air theatre fill sunny ones.
Groups
Rent a boat for the whole group, pack a cool box, and spend an evening on the water. At the end of the month, Pride's street parties and the Pride Walk open the busiest week of the summer.
#Getting Around
From Schiphol, trains reach Centraal in around fifteen minutes, and a tap of a bank card or phone pays for the train, the tram and the metro alike. The ferries across the IJ are free.
Zandvoort is about half an hour from Centraal by train, and Zandvoort aan Zee station is a few minutes' walk from the sand. On a hot weekend the trains are full, so go early or on a weekday.
In July the bike lanes are at their fullest, with many riders on hire bikes who have not cycled in a city before. Inside the canal belt, walking is often quicker than either a tram or a bike.
#Budget & Costs
| Travel style | Per day | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Budget | €115–180 | Hostel bed, market food, a hired bike |
| Mid-range | €260–410 | Canal-belt hotel, a museum, a boat or beach day |
| Luxury | €620+ | Top hotel, tasting menu, a private boat |
July is one of the dearest months, and rates rise through the month as the school holidays spread across Europe and Pride approaches.
Costs worth knowing:
| What | Price |
|---|---|
| Tourist tax | 12.5% of the room price in 2026; the 2027 rate follows the city budget |
| Keti Koti festival | Free |
| Pride Walk and Park Pride | Free |
| Train to Zandvoort | A few euros each way |
| A small electric rental boat | Priced by the hour, dearer at weekends |
- Book hotels months ahead, especially for the last week of July.
- Reserve rental boats a few days ahead.
- Come early in the month for the best rates.
#Food & Dining
Summer food in Amsterdam is eaten outside: herring from the fish stalls, cold beer on a canal-side terrace, and poffertjes, the small puffed pancakes, at the markets. Surinamese food is part of everyday Amsterdam, and on Keti Koti it is everywhere.
Book dinner terraces ahead for the weekends, and at the end of the month, for the start of Pride.
#Nightlife
The terraces stay busy until they close, often at 11pm or midnight, and the bars and clubs take over from there. Open-air festivals run at the edges of the city most summer weekends, and at the end of the month Pride fills the Reguliersdwarsstraat and the Zeedijk with parties.
#Shopping
Many independent shops close for a week or two at some point in the summer, so check before you cross the city for one.
The street markets, the Albert Cuyp, the Noordermarkt and the Waterlooplein flea market, are best early, before the heat and the crowds.
#Culture & Etiquette
- Respect Keti Koti: 1 July is a commemoration first and a celebration second.
- Drinking in the street is banned in parts of the centre, the red-light district included, and the rule is enforced.
- Keep off the cycle lanes on foot.
- Do not moor across a doorway if you are steering a boat: the canals are people's front gardens.
#Essential Local Phrases
| Dutch | Meaning | When to use |
|---|---|---|
| Keti Koti | Chains broken (Sranan Tongo) | On 1 July |
| Wat is het warm! | How hot it is! | On a summer afternoon |
| Een retourtje Zandvoort | A return ticket to Zandvoort | At the station, if you are not tapping in |
| Waar is het strand? | Where is the beach? | Leaving Zandvoort station |
| Mogen we hier aanleggen? | May we moor here? | From a rental boat |
| Proost! | Cheers! | On a terrace |
#Packing List
- Light, breathable clothes
- A light rain jacket for short, heavy showers
- Swimwear and a towel for the beach
- Sunscreen and sunglasses; the sun on the water is strong
- A warm layer for evenings on a boat
- An eye mask for early mornings
- Your phone or card set up for contactless travel
#Backup Plans
If a heatwave arrives: go to the beach or a swimming lake in the morning, spend the hot hours in an air-conditioned museum such as the Stedelijk, and come out again in the evening.
If it rains: visit Het Scheepvaartmuseum or NEMO, both a short walk apart in the Eastern Docklands.
If the centre is overrun: head for Amsterdam Noord across the IJ, the Amsterdamse Bos, or the villages of Waterland by bike.
#Safety & Health
July puts the most people beside the canals, on the warmest evenings, with the most to drink, and the canal edges have no railings; take care after dark. On a boat, whoever steers must stay under the drink-driving limit for cars. Swim only at official swimming spots, never in the canals, where boat traffic makes it dangerous. On a hot day, drink water and find shade, especially at the beach.
Emergency: 112.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is July too hot in Amsterdam?
Rarely. July is the warmest month, with afternoons around 23°C, and only a few days most summers pass 30°C. The catch on those days is that air conditioning is rare in canal houses and older hotels, so ask about cooling before you book a top-floor room.
Is July a dry month in Amsterdam?
No. It has about eleven wet days, more than spring, but the rain usually comes as short, heavy showers between sunny spells rather than as wet days. Carry a light rain jacket and expect to wait out the odd shower in a café.
When is Pride Amsterdam in 2027?
From Saturday 31 July to Saturday 7 August 2027. It opens with the Pride Walk and Park Pride at the Vondelpark open-air theatre on 31 July and ends with the Canal Parade of decorated boats on 7 August, so the last days of July are among the busiest of the year.
How much does July cost in Amsterdam?
It is one of the dearest months. Allow about €260–410 a day mid-range including a canal-belt hotel, with the 12.5% tourist tax added to the room. Rates rise through the month, so the first ten days, before the school holidays start on 10 July, are the best value.
