Cinco de Mayo, Wednesday 5 May, marks the Mexican victory over the French at Puebla in 1862, and is a much smaller occasion here than in the United States. The best place to see it is Peñón de los Baños, a neighbourhood beside the airport, where residents have staged the Battle of Puebla every 5 May for decades: a civic ceremony and parade in the morning and a mock battle in the afternoon.
Día de las Madres, Mother's Day, is always on 10 May, a Monday in 2027, and it fills the city's restaurants more than almost any other day of the year. Families book lunch and dinner weeks ahead, mariachi bands play outside homes across the city in the early morning, and Plaza Garibaldi is packed with musicians for hire.
Noche de Museos falls on the last Wednesday of every month, which in May 2027 is Wednesday 26 May: many museums, among them those of the national fine arts institute, INBAL, stay open from 6pm to 10pm, often free, with concerts, talks and tours.
Corpus Christi falls on Thursday 27 May 2027, the Jueves de Corpus, also called the day of the mules: stalls around the Metropolitan Cathedral sell mulitas, small mules of palm leaf, corn husk or clay, recalling the mules that carried colonial-era pilgrims and their offerings to the cathedral.

Start early at the Templo Mayor and the Metropolitan Cathedral on the Zócalo, then spend the stormy afternoon in the Museo Nacional de Antropología. On the 26th, join Noche de Museos for an evening of free museums.
Couples
Take a morning trajinera at Xochimilco, before the clouds build, and finish the day with dinner on a terrace in Roma Norte, where the warm May evenings are the best of the spring.
Families
Spend a morning in the Bosque de Chapultepec, with its castle, lake and zoo, and the afternoon at the Papalote children's museum or the Museo de Historia Natural.
The Peñón de los Baños battle on 5 May is noisy and colourful, but crowded.

Go to Plaza Garibaldi for mariachi, ideally on the night of 9 May, as the city prepares for Mother's Day, or to a lucha libre night at Arena México, indoors and loud whatever the weather.

At AICM, buy a fixed-fare ride at one of the official taxi desks in arrivals, or meet an app car at its marked pick-up point. One rechargeable card pays for both the Metro and the Metrobús, and the Metrobús along Reforma and Insurgentes is the easier ride outside rush hour.
When the afternoon storm breaks, streets flood quickly, traffic slows to a crawl, and ride-hailing prices rise. Get to your dinner neighbourhood first, and let the rain pass while you are already there.
