February is the driest month Mexico City has. Six millimetres of rain across twenty-eight days, and two days on which any falls at all. Afternoons are warmer than January without being hot, and nights have come up off their floor.
The month has a line through the middle of it. Until roughly mid-February the air is still in its clean winter state.
From then the ozone season begins, and it runs to mid-June with its worst weeks in April and May. February is the last month that is reliably both dry and clear.

Zona MACO (early February)
The largest contemporary art fair in Latin America takes over the Centro Citibanamex for five days and the whole city responds — satellite fairs, gallery openings across Roma and San Miguel Chapultepec, and a week where the art world is visibly in town. Hotel prices in Roma, Condesa and Polanco rise for it.
⚠️ Confirm the current edition's dates with the organiser before booking around it. They move by a few days year to year.
Candelaria (2 February)
Whoever found the figure in the Reyes rosca in January owes tamales today. This is a domestic obligation rather than a public festival, but it means every tamal stand in the city is working at capacity and it is the best single day of the year to eat them.
Walking Roma and Condesa
The two neighbourhoods are at their most pleasant in February: jacarandas have not started, so the streets are green rather than purple, and the terraces are usable at midday without shade.
Xochimilco before the heat
The canals are better in February than in April, when the open boats stop being comfortable in the afternoon.
Coyoacán on a February weekend
The old village square, the market and the two museums — Frida Kahlo and León Trotsky, a few streets apart — make a full day that does not need the heat management April will demand. The market's tostada counters are the reason to arrive hungry.
The satellite fairs
Zona MACO is the large one, but the same week carries several smaller fairs and a run of gallery openings across Roma, Juárez and San Miguel Chapultepec. Most are free and considerably easier to get into than the main fair. Gallery listings in the week before will show what is open; this is the one week of the year when the city's commercial art scene is entirely visible from the street.
#Getting Around
Ordinary conditions, and February is the best month of the year for walking the city: dry, mild, and without the heat that makes April's pavements punishing.
The Centro, Roma, Condesa, Juárez and San Rafael connect on foot more easily than the map suggests once you accept that the blocks are long.

February is among the better value months of the dry season, with one exception: Zona MACO week, when Roma, Condesa and Polanco price like a peak. The 14th also fills restaurants, though it does not move hotel rates much.

Tamales on the 2nd, and the rest of the month belongs to ordinary excellence. This is a good month for the comida corrida habit, because the weather rewards a long lunch followed by a walk rather than a retreat indoors.
Market eating is at its best now: Mercado de San Juan for the unusual, Mercado Medellín in Roma Sur for Latin American groceries and counters, and any neighbourhood market for a fonda at the back.
Tap water is not drunk. Bottled and filtered is universal.

Terraces work again. Roma Norte and Condesa are comfortable outdoors into the evening in a way they are not in January, and the rooftop bars of the Centro overlooking the Zócalo are worth the queue on a clear February night.
Zona MACO week concentrates the crowd and pushes it later.

⚠️ The ozone season starts this month, around the middle of it, and runs to mid-June. February is the last comfortably clean month before it. If you have a respiratory condition and the dry season is what you want, come in the first half of February rather than the second.
Altitude is unchanged and still the issue most likely to be dismissed.
Dry air at altitude dehydrates faster than it feels. Drink more than you want to.
Ordinary city sense otherwise: ride-hail rather than street-hail, phone out of sight at rush hour, busier streets after dark.

- Museums close on Monday. Plan around it rather than discovering it.
- Zona MACO week fills the obvious restaurants; book, or eat in markets, which do not take bookings and do not need them.
- If Frida Kahlo is sold out, San Ángel's Museo Casa Estudio is a short ride and rarely is.
- Reforma closes regularly for marches and for the Sunday cycling programme.
- On a rare wet afternoon, the Centro's museums cluster tightly enough to move between them without much time outside.
