May is Seoul's most comfortable month. Highs reach the mid-20s, nights are mild, and the humidity of summer has not yet arrived. The blossom has gone and the city is green, and the long evenings are warm enough to stay outside until late.
Rain picks up slightly on April, at around 104 mm over seven wet days, but it tends to come in showers rather than long grey spells. Yellow dust eases as the month goes on.
#What to Do in Seoul in May
The Lotus Lantern Festival
Yeondeunghoe, the lantern festival for Buddha's Birthday, is on UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage, and its lantern parade is one of the great nights of the Seoul year. In 2027 the parade runs on Saturday 8 May from 7pm to 9:30pm, carrying thousands of lanterns along Jongno towards Jogyesa temple, with a celebration afterwards. The next day, Sunday 9 May, a traditional culture street festival runs around the temple from 11am to 7pm, followed by lantern play in the evening. All of it is free.
Buddha's Birthday itself
Thursday 13 May in 2027 is Buddha's Birthday, a public holiday. Temples across the city hold ceremonies, and many offer visitors a free bowl of bibimbap at lunchtime. Jogyesa and Bongeunsa are the busiest; smaller temples on the mountainsides are calmer.
The royal ancestral rite
Jongmyo Jerye, the royal ancestral ritual at Jongmyo Shrine, is performed each year on the first Sunday of May, with court music and costumes that have been handed down for centuries. It is on UNESCO's intangible heritage list, and it is one of the few chances to see the shrine used as it was built to be.
Children's Day, for families
5 May is Children's Day, a public holiday dedicated to children. Seoul Grand Park, the Children's Grand Park and Lotte World are at their busiest, with events and performances. If you are travelling with children, join in; if you are not, avoid them.
#Getting Around
May is packed with holidays, and each one shifts the crowds. On Children's Day, 5 May, the zoos, amusement parks and children's museums are overwhelmed, and so are the subway lines to them. On the evening of the Lotus Lantern parade, Saturday 8 May in 2027, roads in Jongno close and the stations around Jonggak and Anguk are crowded from late afternoon.
The early May holidays in China and Japan also bring large numbers of visitors to Seoul in the first week of the month, which shows on the airport trains and in Myeongdong.

On Buddha's Birthday, try the temple bibimbap, and for a full temple meal, the restaurants that serve Korean Buddhist cuisine near Jogyesa are at their best in spring.

May evenings are made for being outside. The riverside parks are busy until late, and the pavement bars in Euljiro and Jongno put their tables out.
The weekend night markets that the city runs along the Han, at spots such as Yeouido and Banpo, usually operate through the warmer months, with food trucks and craft stalls. Check the schedule, because they move between locations.

Carnations are everywhere in early May: 8 May is Parents' Day, when children give them to their parents, and 15 May is Teachers' Day. The flower market at the Express Bus Terminal is busy in the days before both.
Insadong's shops sell lanterns and Buddhist crafts in the weeks before Buddha's Birthday.

At a temple on Buddha's Birthday, walk around the main hall clockwise, keep your voice low near the worshippers, and do not step on the thresholds of the halls. You are welcome to join the queue for bibimbap.
On the lantern parade route, the crowd is large but good-humoured. Do not grab at the lanterns, which are carried by volunteers.
