#At a Glance
April is warm, humid and busy. Highs reach 26°C, the air sits at 83%, and rain doubles on March to 153mm, yet this is still a month for being out of doors, especially before the May storms.
The big date is the Hong Kong Sevens at Kai Tak on 9–11 April 2027, the great rugby party of the Asian year, and the quieter one is Ching Ming on Monday 5 April, when families tend their ancestors' graves. Azaleas flower on the hills, and thunder starts to be heard.
#Weather in Hong Kong in April
Hong Kong in April averages 21–26°C (70–79°F) with around 11 days of rain, and crowds are medium.
| April | |
|---|---|
| Daytime high | About 26°C / 79°F |
| Overnight low | About 21°C / 70°F |
| Wet days | About 11 |
| Rainfall | 153mm, double March |
| Humidity | 83%, the joint highest of the year |
| Thunderstorm days | About 3 |
Figures are the Hong Kong Observatory's 1991–2020 normals; a wet day is one with 0.1mm or more of rain.
What that actually means for your trip:
- The heat is gentle, but humidity makes a long climb feel harder than 26°C suggests.
- Rain starts to come in bursts, with the first thunderstorms of the year.
- Typhoon signals are very rare. They average about a fifth of a day.
- Fog fades after March, and the harbour often clears.
#Dates to Plan Around
- Monday 5 April: Ching Ming. A public holiday. Hillside cemeteries and the roads and buses to them are busy, particularly around Diamond Hill and Wo Hop Shek.
- Friday 9 to Sunday 11 April: the Sevens. Kai Tak Stadium hosts the opening round of the HSBC SVNS World Championship.
- Mid-April: trade fairs. The Convention Centre's big spring fairs fill business hotels around Wan Chai.
- Thursday 29 April: Tin Hau's birthday. Temples to the sea goddess fill up, with lion dances and floral offerings in fishing districts.
#First Swims and Spring Hills
April is the month Hong Kong starts to move back outdoors, and it comes with a short list of things that open up.
The Leisure and Cultural Services Department’s swimming season for public beaches runs from about April to October, with lifeguards on duty from 9am to 6pm. Not every beach is staffed from the first day, as a shortage of lifeguards has kept some closed for part of recent seasons, so check its website before setting off for a remote one. Swim only where lifeguards are on duty, and stay out of the water under a red flag.
Hills are at a turning point. Azaleas flower on the higher slopes in the spring, and Ma On Shan is the classic place to see them, but the air has already begun to feel heavy. A walk that was easy in January needs an early start now. The trails also get slippery after rain, so proper shoes matter, particularly on the stone stairways that make up so much of the country parks.
The month’s holidays pull in opposite directions. Ching Ming sends families up to the hillside cemeteries, and the Sevens brings visitors to Kai Tak the following weekend. Neither troubles the rest of the city much. The spring trade fairs at the Convention Centre are the thing to watch if you are booking a business hotel in Wan Chai, because they can raise rates with no festival to explain it.
The last days of the month are the calmest, before the holiday weeks of May begin.
#What to Do in Hong Kong in April
Use the early mornings, and be flexible about the weather.
Solo Travellers
Walk Lion Rock or the higher slopes of Ma On Shan in the azalea season, starting early, and carry water, since April humidity is draining.
Or take a ferry to Tung Ping Chau, if the boat is running, for the unusual sedimentary rock shelves.
Couples
Try Stanley and Repulse Bay on a weekday, while the beaches are still quiet, then take a late dinner above Sheung Wan on a covered terrace, in case a shower comes through.
Families
The theme parks are comfortable before the May heat, though school breaks fill them in the first days of the month.
Ngong Ping gives children a cable-car ride and the Tian Tan Buddha; check maintenance days first.
Groups
This is the Sevens month. Buy tickets ahead through the organiser, dress up if you are in the South Stand, and book hotels in Kowloon well before the weekend.
#Getting Around
- Octopus on everything, including the minibuses to the trails.
- Airport Express: HK$120 to Hong Kong Station and HK$105 to Kowloon on Octopus.
- To Kai Tak: the stadium is a short walk from Kai Tak station on the Tuen Ma line. Expect heavy crowds after the last match.
- MTR: HK$10.60 from Central to Tsim Sha Tsui on Octopus.
- Island ferries: Pier 5 at Central for Cheung Chau, Pier 4 for Lamma.
#Budget & Costs
| Travel style | Per day | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Budget | HK$800–1,300 | A hostel or guesthouse, cha chaan teng meals, the MTR |
| Mid-range | HK$2,000–3,200 | A central hotel, restaurants, a day trip |
| Luxury | HK$5,500+ | Harbour-view rooms, hospitality at the Sevens |
What things cost:
| What | Price |
|---|---|
| Airport Express to Hong Kong Station, Octopus | HK$120 |
| MTR, Central to Tsim Sha Tsui | HK$10.60 |
| Star Ferry, upper deck, weekday | HK$5 |
| Tram, any distance | HK$3.30 |
| Taxi flagfall, urban red taxi | HK$29 |
Where the money actually goes:
- The Sevens weekend and the spring trade fairs lift room rates; late April is calmer.
- Hotels add a 3% tax and usually a 10% service charge, so check a rate includes both.
#Food & Dining
Warmer weather brings out the cha chaan teng staples: iced lemon tea, French toast, macaroni soup.
Wonton noodles, roast meats over rice and a table at a dai pai dong all work nicely, and for seafood Sai Kung and Lei Yue Mun are the easy trips.
#Nightlife
Sevens weekend takes over Wan Chai and Lan Kwai Fong, and fans in costume fill the bars well into the night.
Otherwise, April is a good month for Knutsford Terrace in Tsim Sha Tsui, with mild outdoor tables, and for a Wednesday at Happy Valley.
#Shopping
Consumer electronics draw people to Sham Shui Po and Mong Kok. The Sevens weekend raises prices nowhere but in hotels and bars, so shop as usual. There is no sales tax.
#Culture & Etiquette
At Ching Ming, cemeteries are private family occasions, so keep your distance and do not photograph mourners. At the Sevens, the costumes are the point, but keep it good-natured, as families attend too.

- Sevens sold out: bars in Wan Chai show every match, and the party there is free to join.
- Ching Ming crowds: avoid the hillside cemeteries and go to an outlying island.
