Dates published by the organiser, Hong Kong China Rugby: Friday 9 to Sunday 11 April at Kai Tak Stadium, opening the HSBC SVNS World Championship.
The Hong Kong Sevens is three days of short, fast rugby at Kai Tak Stadium, and the most famous party in the sport. Tickets are usually sold as a three-day General Admission pass. Over-18s can sit in the costumed South Stand on a first-come basis, and families have the rest of the ground. Book the room early: the weekend is one of the busiest of the Hong Kong spring.
What Hong Kong Sevens actually is
Sevens is rugby cut down to seven players a side and fourteen minutes a game, so a tournament packs in dozens of matches, with the result of each settled before your drink gets warm. Hong Kong has hosted it since the seventies and made the format famous.
The tournament moved to Kai Tak Sports Park after decades at the old Hong Kong Stadium in So Kon Po, and the new ground drew more than 110,000 people over its first weekend there. It stands on the site of the old airport, with a retractable roof.
The rugby is only half of it. The South Stand is a three-day fancy-dress party with a loud and sometimes brilliant sense of humour.
Where to watch Hong Kong Sevens
- The South Stand, if you are over 18. It is open to adult General Admission holders on a first-come basis, so queues build early on the busiest days. A separate South Stand pass has sold faster entry, and it sold out at the last tournament.
- The lower and upper bowls, for the rugby. If you came to see the games, or you are with children, sit anywhere else; the views are better and the noise is lower.
- Wan Chai, if you have no ticket. The bars around Lockhart Road and Lan Kwai Fong in Central show the matches, and fans in costume fill both after the final whistle.
Tickets and what it costs
General Admission tickets for the whole weekend are the normal route, and they go on sale months ahead: the last tournament opened sales in the previous October, with a pre-sale in November, and passed 100,000 tickets sold. Register on the organiser’s site to hear when sales open. Under-12s pay a child rate.
Single-day tickets have been sold nearer the time through partners. Prices for this edition had not been published when this page was written.

Getting there
Kai Tak station on the Tuen Ma line is a short walk from the stadium. After the last match on each night the station queues are long, so stay for a drink or walk on to the next station if your legs still work.
Hotels in Kowloon City, To Kwa Wan and Hung Hom put you close, and anything on the East Rail or Tuen Ma lines is easy. The Airport Express does not stop nearby.
Mistakes worth avoiding
Bringing children to the South Stand
It is adults only, and the rule is enforced. Anyone under 18 sits elsewhere in the ground, so a family should plan on that from the start.
Leaving the room until spring
The weekend draws fans from around the world, and the spring trade fairs are not far away. Rooms within easy reach of the Tuen Ma line go early.
Trusting the old guides
Anything that mentions So Kon Po, Causeway Bay station or a walk from Hong Kong Stadium is out of date. The tournament moved, and so did the bars that matter on the way home.
Dressing for the weather you left
April here means about 26°C with high humidity and a good chance of rain, and costumes are hot. The roof may close, but bring water and something you can stand in for ten hours.

Frequently asked questions
Where are the Hong Kong Sevens played?
At Kai Tak Stadium in Kai Tak Sports Park, Kowloon. The tournament moved there from Hong Kong Stadium in So Kon Po. Kai Tak station on the Tuen Ma line is a short walk away.
How much are Hong Kong Sevens tickets?
For the last tournament, a three-day adult General Admission pass was HK$2,000 and a child’s HK$980. Prices for this edition are published by the organiser when sales open.
Can children go to the Hong Kong Sevens?
Yes, and there is a child rate for under-12s, but anyone under 18 is barred from the South Stand. The rest of the ground is a good family day out.
Do you need to wear fancy dress?
No. It is a tradition of the South Stand rather than a rule, and many fans elsewhere come in team shirts. If you do dress up, remember that April is warm and humid.
