#Weather in Rome in October

Rome in October averages 12–22°C (54–72°F) with around 7 days of rain, and crowds are medium.

Measure October in Rome
Daytime high About 22°C / 72°F, warmer early in the month
Overnight low About 12°C / 54°F
Rain About 7 wet days, heavier in the second half
Sunset 6:53pm on the 1st, 6:07pm on the 30th, then 5:06pm after the clocks go back on the 31st
Big dates St Francis holiday, Monday 4 October 2027; film festival in the second half of the month
Crowds Thinner than summer, busy at weekends

Figures are NOAA 1991–2020 normals for Rome Ciampino.

What that actually means for your trip:

  • The first half is warm and settled. Early October often feels like a mild September, with lunch outdoors and evenings in a light jacket.
  • The rain arrives in the second half. Rome's wettest months are autumn's, and late October can bring days of steady rain; carry a waterproof layer.
  • The clocks go back on Sunday 31 October 2027. Sunset jumps from after 6pm to about 5pm, so the last day of the month is suddenly an early-dark one.
  • Food is at its autumn best. Porcini, chestnuts, the first white truffles and the year's new olive oil all arrive in October.

Is October a good time to visit Rome? Yes, it is one of the best: mild weather, autumn food, the summer crowds gone and prices below spring's peak. The trade is rain in the second half and shorter days. Come in the first three weeks if you can, and avoid the 2–4 October holiday weekend if you want the centre quiet.

The St Francis long weekend

The feast of St Francis, Italy's patron saint, became a national holiday again in 2026, after nearly fifty years off the calendar. Assisi is the centre of the celebrations; in Rome, the connection is in Trastevere, at the church of San Francesco a Ripa, where Francis stayed on his visits to the city. See our guide to the Feast of San Francesco for what closes.

The Rome Film Festival

The Festa del Cinema di Roma takes over the Auditorium Parco della Musica in the second half of October, with premieres, red carpets and public screenings; the 2027 dates are published by the festival. Tickets for public screenings are reasonably priced, and the red-carpet arrivals can be watched from the public areas.

The Appian Way on a Sunday

The Via Appia Antica is largely closed to through traffic on Sundays, when Romans walk and cycle the ancient road between tombs, umbrella pines and the entrances to the catacombs. Hire a bike near the start of the park and ride out into the countryside that begins just a few kilometres from the Colosseum.

Day trips: Tivoli and Orvieto

Tivoli, under an hour from Rome, has two UNESCO sites: the Renaissance gardens and fountains of Villa d'Este and the vast ruins of Hadrian's Villa below the town. In October the gardens are green, the crowds thin, and the light on the ruins is soft.

Orvieto, about an hour and a quarter north by train, has a spectacular cathedral facade, an underground city of caves, and the new season's white wine.

The Borghese and the big museums

Galleria Borghese admits small groups in two-hour slots, booked in advance, for Bernini's sculptures and the Caravaggios; October slots are easier to get than spring's.

The Vatican Museums (€20) and the Capitoline Museums are good for a rainy day.

The Colosseum, Forum and Palatine use timed tickets booked online.

Solo Travellers

Walk the Palatine in the morning, then the Aventine for the Knights of Malta keyhole and the Orange Garden view over the Tiber.

Largo di Torre Argentina, where the ruins of the Curia of Pompey mark the area where Caesar was killed, now has walkways among the temples and a sanctuary for the city's cats.

Couples

Spend a day at Tivoli, then a long dinner in Trastevere or Monti with a bottle of new-season wine. October evenings are still mild enough for an outside table early in the month.

Families

Explora, the children's museum near Piazza del Popolo, has hands-on exhibits for younger children; book a session. The cats at Largo Argentina and the Mouth of Truth at Santa Maria in Cosmedin are reliable hits.

Groups

October is the end of the grape harvest in the Castelli Romani; estates around Frascati and Marino open for tastings and cellar visits, and the Marino Grape Festival on the first weekend of October fills the town.

A long group dinner in Pigneto or Testaccio is where Romans eat.

#Getting Around

Fiumicino connects to Termini by the Leonardo Express, about 32 minutes, or the slower FL1 regional train.

From Ciampino, airport buses run to Termini.

In the city, Metro A serves Spagna and the Vatican side, Metro B the Colosseum, and buses and trams cover the rest.

A single BIT ticket is €1.50 for 100 minutes, and you can tap a contactless bank card at the metro gates.

#Budget & Costs

Travel style Per day What it covers
Budget €60–85 Pizza al taglio, market lunches, public transport
Mid-range €130–200 Trattoria meals, paid sights, a central hotel
Luxury €350+ Fine dining and the top hotels

October rates sit well below spring's peak, except over the 2–4 October holiday weekend and the last weekend of the month before All Saints' Day.

Costs worth knowing:

What Price
Vatican Museums €20
Pantheon €5
Trevi Fountain basin €2
BIT single ticket €1.50
Roma Pass 72h €62.90
  • The coperto, a cover charge of a couple of euros, appears on most bills; tipping is not expected beyond rounding up.
  • Truffle dishes carry a supplement; ask the price before the shaving starts.
  • Book the long weekends early; prices and demand rise over 2–4 October and 30 October to 1 November.

#Food & Dining

Carbonara and Roman autumn trattoria cooking
Carbonara and Roman autumn trattoria cooking

October is Rome's best food month:

  • Porcini and other wild mushrooms appear on trattoria menus.
  • Chestnuts, castagne, are roasted on street corners.
  • White truffles arrive from the north, shaved over tagliolini at a price.
  • Olio novello, the year's new olive oil, green and peppery, appears in shops at the end of the month.

Antico Forno Roscioli, near Campo de' Fiori, is the bakery for pizza bianca by the slice.

Pipero Roma, near Corso Vittorio Emanuele, is one of the city's best contemporary tasting menus.

Il Sorpasso in Prati is an all-day wine bar and kitchen good for sampling new wines from Lazio and Umbria.

#Nightlife

October brings Rome's nightlife back to its full rhythm: the students return, the clubs resume their programmes and the cinema and concert season begins.

Pigneto's bars, with Necci among the best known, are where young Romans go; Trastevere stays lively; and Salotto 42, facing the columns of the Temple of Hadrian in Piazza di Pietra, is a stylish place for an aperitivo.

The Auditorium Parco della Musica starts its autumn season of concerts.

#Shopping

The autumn collections are in, and the crowds are lower than in spring.

Volpetti in Testaccio is the place for porcini, truffle products and the new olive oil to take home.

Porta Portese on Sunday mornings is Rome's big flea market; go early.

Via del Governo Vecchio has vintage and small boutiques.

#Culture & Etiquette

  • 4 October is a national holiday again; expect closures that older guides don't mention.
  • All Saints' Day, 1 November, is a Monday in 2027, so the last weekend of October becomes another long weekend.
  • Dress codes for churches: covered shoulders and knees at the major basilicas.
  • Order the seasonal specials: autumn food is the point of October.
  • The film festival brings Italian celebrities to the Auditorium; watch from the public areas, and keep it relaxed.

  • Light layers for warm middays and cool evenings

  • A compact umbrella
  • Sunscreen for early-October sun
  • A scarf for churches and cool evenings

#Backup Plans

If it rains all day: the Vatican Museums fill a day in any weather, and the Capitoline Museums above the Forum have superb collections and a view over the ruins from their café.

If the Forum paths are muddy after a storm: go to the National Etruscan Museum at Villa Giulia, one of Italy's finest museums of the pre-Roman world, rarely crowded.

If Tivoli is too wet for the gardens: go to Palestrina instead, a hilltop town with the extraordinary Nile Mosaic in its archaeological museum.

#Safety & Health

October is safe and comfortable.

Pickpockets work Bus 64, Metro A, the Colosseum and the Trevi Fountain; keep bags zipped and in front. Avoid the costumed "gladiators" who charge for photos.

Rain is the main hazard: Rome's cobbles, the sampietrini, are slippery when wet, so wear shoes with rubber soles. Drink from the nasoni, the public fountains.

Emergency: 112.
