Entry is by timed ticket and the off-peak slots are free, but free still means booked. The gate turns away anyone without one, which is the single thing that catches visitors out. The other thing worth knowing: the opening weeks are dramatically quieter than the December peak for exactly the same event.
What Winter Wonderland actually is
A large temporary funfair, market and entertainment site built in the south-eastern corner of Hyde Park each winter and dismantled again in the new year. Bavarian-style market chalets, an outdoor ice rink around the Victorian bandstand, big fairground rides, an ice sculpture attraction, a circus show and a great deal of mulled wine. It is unapologetically commercial and enormously popular, and it is the default London Christmas outing for a reason.
Where to watch Winter Wonderland
- The ice rink around the bandstand. The largest outdoor rink in the UK, skated in timed sessions with the Victorian bandstand lit at the centre. Booked separately from entry and the evening slots go first.
- The Magical Ice Kingdom. A walk-through attraction of carved ice sculptures kept well below freezing. Warm clothing is genuinely required rather than a suggestion, and parkas are usually available at the door.
- Cirque Berserk. A circus and stunt show running in its own tent through the season, ticketed separately and one of the few parts of the site that works just as well in bad weather.
- The Starflyer. The tall swing ride, and the best view in the park: central London at night from a considerable height, which is worth the queue on a clear evening.
- The market chalets. Free to wander, which is the point. If you are on a free off-peak entry slot, the markets, the lights and the atmosphere cost nothing beyond what you choose to eat and drink.
Tickets and what it costs
Entry is timed and tiered: off-peak slots are free, standard slots carry a small charge, and peak slots cost a little more. Every slot must be booked in advance regardless of price. Rides, the ice rink, the ice sculpture attraction and the circus are all charged separately on top, and a family can spend a great deal more inside than the entry price suggests. Budget realistically for food and rides rather than treating the free entry as the cost of the day.

Getting there
Hyde Park Corner on the Piccadilly line is closest to the main entrance, with Green Park and Marble Arch both walkable alternatives that are often less congested on the way out. The site sits in the park’s south-eastern corner. Do not drive: parking around the park is scarce, expensive and inside the congestion charge zone.
