Kyoto Rewards Careful Timing
Kyoto rewards careful timing more than almost anywhere else in our collection — the gap between a perfect visit and a frustrating one comes down to picking the right week.
Spring & Summer — Blossoms and Festivals
Spring (March–May) is the most celebrated season, peaking in the first week of April when cherry blossoms fill Maruyama Park, the Philosopher's Path, and the Arashiyama riverside. It is also the most crowded and expensive window of the year — book hotels four to six months in advance. May, after Golden Week, is the smarter spring choice: fresh green maples, lower crowds, and the Aoi Matsuri parade on May 15. Summer is brutally hot and humid but home to Gion Matsuri, Japan's most spectacular month-long festival, and the Daimonji fire ceremony on August 16.
Autumn & Winter — Foliage and Quiet Temples
Autumn (September–November) is the second great photo season, peaking from mid-November to early December when Tofuku-ji, Eikan-do, and Kiyomizu-dera turn vivid red and gold. Winter is the city at its most peaceful and affordable — quiet temples, low rates, occasional snow on Kinkaku-ji, and the Setsubun bean-throwing ceremonies in early February.
